Another Wednesday means another Rewind! This time we are visiting “Torn" by Natalie Imbruglia. Although the song was originally written in 1993 by independent song writers and sang by multiple singers/bands before Imbruglia, she still took the track to number one in 1997.
The track peaked at number 1 in Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Iceland, Spain and Sweden, as well as on three US Billboard charts. Imbruglia received a grammy nomination and narrowly lost to Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On."
The music video is simple but gives us such a 90s nostalgic feeling. Featuring the British actor Jeremy Sheffield. Directed by Alison Maclean, the video features a shot of an apartment where the camera angle never changes. During the climax of the track the walls start to shake and a crew appears and starts dismantling. There's something about it that feels like a school project music video, maybe it's the interlaced B-roll of bad takes or the moment when random builders come into the shot to take the set down. Either way, it's a classic, it was always on the radio and is soooo catchy.
