Rewind: Hikari (Utada Hikaru 2000)
Welcome back to rewind! where we share our favourite music videos to pass time to.
Sometimes it's the simplest ideas that make great content. This week we are taking a look at how 'simple' can make for a cute, interesting video. However, you do need one very important ingredient to make it successful - an absolute legend of a performer front and centre. This is key.
Enter Utada Hikaru. Debuting in the late '90s at 15 years old, Utada is Japan's reigning music queen. She was one of the artists at the forefront of the new wave of singer/songwriters taking Japan by storm when love for idol groups shifted gears. Owning three spots in the top 10 best selling albums of all time in Japan (of course, one of her albums is number one!), Utada's music has spanned a number of genres over a number of decades. The single we are looking at this week, Hikari, was created for the hit Square Enix game, Kingdom Of Hearts. For the music video, Utada had grand, intricate ideas in mind. She was to work with her then director-husband, Kazuaki Kiriya, but due to his heavy work schedule, Kazuaki could not fulfill her request. Instead, he was called in at the last minute to film her simply washing the dishes. Why? As Utada said herself in a blog post, she enjoys doing the dishes! In one continuous take, Utada walks over to the sink and begins washing up, drinks water and lip-syncs while grooving every now and then. The natural performance was praised by a lot of critics who are used to Utada's more curated music videos. For us, watching such a huge star like Utada doing such a mundane task was refreshing. It also makes us wish we looked as cool and cute as her washing dishes. We hope you enjoy this video and implore you to check out more of Utada!
