Weekend Watch: American Psycho (2000)
It’s that time again, the weekend watch is here! This week we are checking out American psycho. This film is from the year 2000 and features an all-star cast including Christian Bale, William Defoe, Jared Leto, and Samantha Mathis. Oh yeah and also Leonardo DiCaprio was originally cast as Patrick Bateman (Bale) but decided to leave in favour of the film the beach - also a great film which we will probably be doing in the future.
Let’s get to the meat and potatoes of this film. Originally based on the Brett Easton Ellis 1991 novel of the same name. The film follows Patrick Bateman, a wealthy investment banker who’s life revolves around dining out at fancy restaurants and trying to keep his fiancée Evelyn happy. We are shown glimpses of batsman’s thoughts as he sits at tables with people he despises and we watch as his rage slowly turns into an appetite to kill. As the film progresses we are fully exposed to just how messed up Bateman is.
"I feel lethal, on the verge of frenzy. I think my mask of sanity is about to slip.” - Patrick Bateman
This flick features some of the goriest and disturbing scenes of any films that were around at the time. Because of this, some film critiques left some negative reviews but for the most part, people loved it. At the films, debut at the Sundance film festival critiques praised Christian Bale for his performance.
We’ve yet to meet someone who doesn’t dig this film. Maybe it’s Patrick Bateman dancing to its hip to be square in Mac trenchcoat whilst wielding a fire axe or maybe it’s just Bateman's knowledge of 80s pop music that makes this film so entertaining.
