Weekend Watch: Chef (2014)
Food, food, FOOD! How good is food? It's pretty much one of our favourite things! And when we are stuck for ideas of what to watch, movies involving food are our go-to. What came to mind this week is a very delightful, very fun movie of an amazing chef who needs to find his 'win'. Get your napkins round your neck for this weekend's watch, Chef.
Starting from scratch never tasted so good.
Carl Casper (Jon Favreau) is head chef at the upscale LA restaurant, Gauloises. Although loved by his kitchen staff, he has a strained relationship with his son, ex-wife Inez (Sofia Vergara) and Gauloises owner Riva (Dustin Hoffman). One night, Carl has the opportunity to serve prestigious food critic Ramsey Michael (Oliver Platt) and quickly dreams up a new, innovative menu for the occasion. However, at the last minute, Riva orders Carl to stick to the original menu, which he concedes to and ends up receiving a scathing review from Ramsey. Carl, in a heated moment, decides to Tweet Ramsey a confrontational message, unknowing that Twitter is a public platform. This ignites a war and soon Carl's outburst makes him an outcast and unhireable, even though his skills are well known. Although fiercely supported by his staff and head hostess Molly (Scarlett Johansson), Carl loses his passion for being a chef until Inez encourages him to start down a new path... with a food truck. Emboldened, Carl embarks on the journey with his son and previous line cook Martin (John Leguizamo). Will he finally find his culinary wings?
This heartwarming comedy is beautifully played out by an exceptional cast of actors. Directed and written by Jon Favreau, this movie will make you smile from ear to ear and also make you extremely hungry for Cuban food. We hope you enjoy!
