Weekend Watch: Jamón Jamón (1992)
What lengths would you go to to ensure your child didn't marry someone you didn't like? And if you were the child, what would you do to keep a hold of your lover? Such questions are explored this weekend via the fantastically dramatic and over the top tale of Jamón Jamón.
A Dish Of A Woman
Sylvia (Penélope Cruz) works in a factory making men's underwear. Her lover is Jose Luis (Jordi Mollà) who is the pampered son of the owner's of the factory. When Sylvia announces to Jose that she has missed her period, Jose promptly promises to stay by her side. His parents are less than pleased about this coupling and Jose's mother, Conchita (Stefania Sandrelli), devises a plan to lure Sylvia away from her son. The plan? To hire potential underwear model Raul (Javier Bardem) to seduce Sylvia. What ensues is a mess of feelings as players within the plot start to fall for each other, creating more drama than what they began with. Who will end up with who? Watch to find out!
This love drama is beyond epic and should absolutely not be taken seriously! Sex, food and sex is what drives this film and the performances by the actors make it impossible to not believe these larger than life characters. This was Penélope's film debut and the chemistry between her and Javier can be seen even then (cuuuuuute). Jamón Jamón can be rented on Amazon Prime for £2.49 (**Price and availability correct at time of post!)
