Weekend Watch: Murder By Numbers (2002)
After a few weeks of lolz (Mrs Doubtfire two weeks ago) and kick butt action (Charlie’s Angels the week before that) we thought we would suggest a nice, psychological thriller this weekend. It’s colder, it’s darker earlier and so what better time to get buried under blankets and use your crime detective skills alongside Sandra Bullock? Settle in for Murder By Numbers.
"She was the only flaw in their plan." - Warner Bros.
Rich kids, Richard Haywood (Ryan Gosling) and Justin Pendleton (Michael Pitt) are brilliant and bored students at San Benito High School, California. Haywood is seen as the cool guy with everything and Pendleton the genius loner. An unlikely pair, little does everyone know these two are very close and share an extremely dark idea - committing the perfect crime. Meeting after school at an old holiday lodge on the cliffs, Richard and Justin have been devising a plan to carry out the kill, meticulously planning each step - and they are ready to put it to the test. Cassie Mayweather (Sandra Bullock), a skilled but very troubled detective lands a fresh graduate, Sam Kennedy (Ben Chaplin), as her new partner just in time to investigate the boy’s crime. As they delve deeper into the case, the planted evidence throws the two and details about the murder dredge up past memories for Mayweather. Kennedy begins to learn just how complex his veteran partner is to break through to and why she isn’t particularly favoured by the rest of the force. Could they fall in love? Will they catch the real killers? The movie ends with one heck of a final scene that will leave you on the edge of your seat!
