It's Mother's Day weekend and in celebration of this special day we've opened up a discussion with three amazing women to talk about the nitty grittys of experiencing motherhood for the first time as well as all the new feelings we learn from bearing children. Close friend of pam pam, Maya is a professional body piercer and laser technician based in Enfield, North London. Last year Maya gave birth to 4 month old, Nova and kindly shared with us some of the most intimate and personal moments of motherhood so far.

What’s the most important things you’ve learnt about becoming a mother?
That my priority is the wellbeing of my child in all aspects of her life.
Tell us about your own childhood and how your upbringing influenced you?
We were very lucky to have the support of an extended family. I grew up realising the important impact this had on myself and my siblings. Im lucky that Nova too will gain from having the same support network around her. It takes a village to raise a child! Family is everything.
What hidden truths have you encountered about being a new mum?
Being a mum is hardwork and theres nothing wrong for saying that. Theres no rule book to follow. You just strive to be the best you can be.
What’s the hardest thing you’ve had to deal with through experiencing motherhood?
Being seperated from my baby after a seemingly uncompicated birth. Nothing prepares you for that feeling of helplessness. Loss of identity I have also found very difficult even though I absolutely love being a mum.
How do you balance a good work and family lifestyle?
Im in a fortunate position of being able to be a stay at home mum. But I also know that if I needed to juggle home and work life, I will have the support of my family.
Tell us about your values being in motherhood as the position of a teacher?
My values in life have remained the same as before motherhood. My job as an educator to my child is about enabling them to grow into a well balanced adult that is confident and happy in the person they become.
Three questions that you have asked your mum when experiencing motherhood?
I cant narrow it down. I ask my mum about everything. Shes there to give me advice but also to reasure me that I am doing a good job and am making the right desicions. Giving me the strength to believe in my abilty in being a great mum to my child.
What elements of your mother inspires you the most?
Shes always tried to stay strong and do the best for us. She has always supported us with everything we have done.
What are you looking forward to this year?
Im looking forward to every adventure ahead of me with my baby. I can’t wait to build the most amazing bond with her. There is so much that will be happening in this short but exciting time.
