Weekend Watch: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990)
A special one for Valentine’s day. Of course, we are all acclimatized to it being a day to spend with and gush over lovers. But we rather enjoy celebrating the relationships that definitely deserve some extra honey, too, and that’s the bro-love - the fam-love. And with this in mind, we thought of the coolest family unit there is - the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. No doubt some of you reading picked out which turtle was your absolute fave. Probably based on colour, or maybe based on weapon. To use nunchucks would be the raddest thing, are we right? Little dangerous to one’s self though if you’re not pro. But you would be pro, just like Michaelangelo. Anyway, let’s go back to where it all began… a sewer in New York, 1990. Help us spread the phrase ‘cowabunga’ again with this weekend’s watch, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Thanks to a mysterious goop affectionately named, Ooze, four baby turtles mutate into people-sized, smack-talking, pizza-loving dudes that live underground in New York City. Having learned their amazing martial arts abilities and weapon training from their mentor, a rat named Splinter, the turtles are taught the ways of good and live out their lives in relative peace. Above the surface, times are turbulent with petty crime and theft on the rise. A large group of adolescents appear to be behind the dirty deeds and reporter, April O’Neil (Judith Hoag) intends to get the story. Problem is the chief of police, Chief Sterns, urges April to keep her nose out of his business. Undeterred, O’Neil cracks on with her story, but as she leaves the office one night, she is jumped. Luckily, Raphael was able to save her and this chance meeting with the giant turtle FREAKS April out but also kicks off her journey to finding the truth.
An action-packed story, full of the characters you know and love. Plus, a killer soundtrack and delicious pizza. Sit back, hug your loved ones and enjoy!
