Weekend Watch: Almost Famous (2000)
Ever wondered what a rock star's lifestyle is really like? Ever wanted to be a proper groupie? Imagine emerging from a sheltered life to experience rock and roll in the thick of the ‘70s? It's these questions and musings we have when thinking about this weekend's watch, Almost Famous.
Experience it. Enjoy it. Just don't fall for it.
William Miller (Patrick Fugit) is a young prodigy who lives with his over protective mother Elaine Miller (Frances McDormand) and big sister Anita (Zoey Deschanel). Anita feels her mother is too overbearing which puts them at odds and William in the middle. It isn't until his big sister leaves in protest that William's world receives a shock. In her absence, he discovers her secret rock and roll collection and begins listening covertly. This spurs him to want to become a rock journalist, much to his mother's detriment. At 15 years old, he is given the opportunity to cover an up and coming band for Rolling Stone Magazine. Against his mother’s wishes, William joins the band's tour and is fully submitted to what 'living' rock n roll is really like. His world is changed further as he bonds with the seemingly carefree groupie Penny Lane (Kate Hudson) and lead guitarist Russell Hammond (Billy Crudup)
This amazing coming of age story is so brilliantly told and played by the incredible cast - honestly, it’s a powerhouse line up! Fun fact, the role of Russell Hammond was originally for Brad Pitt, who read for the part but decided in unison with director Cameron Crowe that he wasn’t right for the part. We hope you enjoy!
