Weekend Watch: Romeo + Juliet (1996)
This weekend, we are watching one of the most classic stories ever told. Here in London, the weather is a bit miserable and what suits rain is love and drama... or so we reckon. SO, we have chosen the version surely known by all - Baz Lurhman's Romeo + Juliet.
The greatest love story the world has ever known.
Verona beach, modern day. Two highly influential families, the Capulets and the Montagues, are locked in a forever feud. The hatred for each other is seething and their constant battles are well reported. The Capulets have a daughter, Juliet (Claire Danes), who they have just found a match for. She will be married to Paris (Paul Rudd) much to her surprise as a very young and not yet ready or willing girl to be married. The Montagues have a son, Romeo (Leonardo DiCaprio), who is going through an emotional breakup with his dear Rosaline. Romeo's friend, Mercutio (Harrold Perrineau) invites Romeo and his friends to the Capulet party as a way for Romeo to shake off his forlorn feelings. At this party is the fateful meeting of Romeo and Juliet - both equally captured by each other. What begins between them sets off a series of events that are so tragic it hurts.
Baz Lurhman's version of this epic tale is one of beauty, grit and truth that make it accessible to the modern day audience. From his choice of players to the costumes to the music, everything is so perfectly selected and works beautifully together... just as Romeo and Juliet would have. Sad. We hope you enjoy revisiting this iconic film!
Romeo + Juliet can be rented on Google Play, YouTube, Amazon Prime for £3.49. Available to Disney+ Subscribers. (**Prices and availability correct at time of post)
