The New Balance 740V2

New Balance Trainers

The 740V2 is one of the more interesting things New Balance has brought back recently, mostly because of where it comes from. It isn't a running shoe.

New Balance made basketball shoes through the eighties and nineties and largely stopped, and the 740V2 pulls its proportions from that end of the archive rather than the running one. That's why it looks different from a 574 or a 327 — the sole is chunkier through the middle, the upper sits higher around the ankle, and the whole thing has more presence on the foot than the numbers suggest.

Suede overlays over mesh panels, so it breathes better than a full leather trainer and holds its shape better than a full mesh one.

It works with relaxed tailoring, which is not something you can say about most chunky trainers. The height through the ankle means it doesn't disappear under a wide trouser the way a low profile shoe does.

This and the rest of the range are in our New Balance collection.
