Women’s ROTOTO Socks

RoToTo socks come out of Koryo, a small town in Nara that's been knitting socks since 1910 and makes more of them than anywhere else in Japan. The brand runs old low-gauge machines nobody manufactures any more, and the Double Face — wool outside, cotton against the skin — is the pair it's known for. Most of what we stock is the everyday end, crew and mini-crew and the 3-packs, in socks; the beanies sit in hats.

Women's RoToTo Double Face and Everyday Socks

The Double Face is the sock RoToTo built its name on. Two layers knitted as one — wool on the outside for warmth, organic cotton on the inside so there's never wool against your skin — and it's the pair to start with if you've not had a RoToTo before. The mini-crew version is the same idea cut lower. Around it sit the daily socks: the organic cotton crews, the recycled cotton and wool 3-packs, the City socks, the stripes and the checkerboards. RoToTo sizing is unisex and runs in Japanese sizes, so check the size guide rather than going by your shoe size.

RoToTo Pile, Room and Boot Socks

This is the part of the range that carries the collection through winter and disappears in July. Pile socks are knitted with a looped inside, which is what makes them thick and soft underfoot. The room socks are for indoors. The chunky pile boot socks go inside a boot. The merino lambswool room socks are the warmest thing here, and the pile stripe marl is the one that looks best with a sandal, if that's your sort of thing. If you get cold feet, this is where to look.

RoToTo Tech-Mesh Socks and Beanies

The Allrounder Tech-Mesh is the summer sock — thin, with mesh panels, in no-show, ankle and crew, and a couple in tie-dye. They're the newest thing in the range and the ones we'd wear with trainers from May. The Bulky Watch Cap is the beanie, thick and ribbed, and it's the only thing on this page that isn't a sock.

Look at the packaging when a pair arrives. The ring the socks hang from is offcut from finishing the toe — Koryo produces a great deal of it and has found uses for most of it. There's more in socks and underwear, the beanies are in hats, and anything reduced is in sale accessories.
