Sunspel has made clothes in and around Nottingham since 1860, and the women's range keeps to plain shapes in good cloth. Women's Sunspel Jackets and Coats

The outerwear is where Sunspel's attention to cloth shows most. The trench is double-breasted and belted, with raglan shoulders and deep pockets, cut from an Italian cotton the brand describes as lightweight and water-repellent. That makes it a coat for most of the year, though not one for a proper downpour. The Twin Pocket Jacket is shorter and easier, with a soft collar and two patch pockets. Sunspel makes it in more than one cloth, and the light camel here is double-faced recycled Italian wool with a contrasting colour on the inside, cut mid-length with room for a jumper underneath. We'd wear the jacket over knitwear through autumn and keep the trench for everything else.

Women's Sunspel T-Shirts: Classic or Boy Fit

Sunspel says it made some of the earliest T-shirts, back when they were sold as undershirts. The Classic is the closer cut, skimming the body and finishing just above the waist, and it's made in Long Eaton from a two-fold fabric Sunspel calls Q82, spun from extra-long staple Supima cotton. The Boy Fit is relaxed, with dropped shoulders and slightly longer sleeves, and Sunspel says to take your usual size. Neither is cheap for a T-shirt. If you want to tuck it in, go Classic.

Sunspel Knitwear, Sweatshirts and Fragrance

The knitwear runs from lambswool crews and funnel necks to mohair jumpers and vests, with ribbed roll necks and henleys for layering. Lambswool is the warmer, springier one; mohair is lighter than it looks and can shed a little at first. The loopback sweatshirts are cotton jersey with small loops on the inside, softer and less bulky than a brushed fleece-back. If you're buying for someone and don't know their size, the fragrance is the safer route, in Sea Moss, Oakwood or Green Cedar.
