Black + Blum Lunch Boxes & Food Storage

Black + Blum is a London design studio, started in 1998 by Dan Black and Martin Blum, who met studying industrial design at Northumbria. They made doorstops and corkscrews for years before switching to food and drink containers, and the studio has picked up more than twenty-five design awards along the way. What we stock is the lunch range — glass pots, a steel food box and an insulated thermo pot.

Black + Blum Glass Lunch Pots and Bowls

Glass is the heavier option and the one we'd still pick. Food doesn't stain it, it doesn't hold the smell of last week's curry the way plastic does, and you can see what's in there without opening it. The Lunch Pot Large is the deeper of the two and takes a proper portion; the Lunch Bowl is shallower and better for a salad. Both have a silicone band round the outside, which is what stops them sliding about in a bag.

The Steel Food Box is the lighter, more knockabout option — stainless steel, no glass to worry about, and it'll take being dropped in a rucksack every day. The Thermo Pot is the insulated one, and it's the piece to look at if you want to carry soup or something you cooked the night before. It's the most expensive thing on this page and the one that changes what you can realistically take to work.

The Lunch Bag is the odd one out here — fabric rather than steel or glass, and made to carry the others. If you're buying a pot and a bag together it's worth thinking about which way round they'll sit, because a tall pot and a flat bag is a common mistake.
