It's the most prestigious movie event of the year, with all actors and actresses dreaming of their big speech moment. The Academy Awards offers talents the highest form of recognition you can imagine, some may even say that history has been made at the award ceremony. From Halle Berry winning her Oscar for her performance in Monster's Ball and becoming the first black woman to ever win an award for Best Actress to Kathryn Bigelow winning Best Director for her movie, The Hurt Locker and being the first woman to win in the category, EVER. It's the biggest night of the year for actors and they sure pull out all the stops when it comes to the red carpet looks. We take a look as some of our favourite sneaker moments in history at the imfamous red carpet event!

The one person that always brings the goodies at every awards show. After being nominated 5 times, Spike Lee finally wins the award for Best Picture with the beautiful movie, The Green Book and he sure likes to win in style. The highly acclaimed film explores a true story of friendship in the deep south during the 1960’s, also won awards for Best Supporting Actor with Mahershala Ali and Best Original Screenplay. Spike Lee accepted his award in a pair of custom made gold Nike Jordans. Complete with a deep purple Ozwald Boateng suit and iconic Lee specs with the same, deep purple, colour to match.

Viola Davis is our girl of the moment. Whilst winning an Oscar for her role in Fences at 2017’s awards ceremony, Viola rocked a pair of red Stuart Weitzman pumps. The actress then headed off the the Vanity Fair Oscars party in complete ‘Boogie Nights’ style with a pair of metallic gold sneaker creepers and a Diana Ross style, crisp white, Brandon Maxwell jumpsuit. This year Viola didn’t win her round of Oscars but she’s still as groovy as it gets!

Sneakers on the red carpet is nothing new here. Sally Fields set her little feet free from the heels back in 2013 whilst sporting a red Valentino gown at the Vanity Fair Oscars party! The actress is known for her supporting roles in Forrest Gump and Lincoln, one of which won her an Oscar. Sally won Best Actress for her role as Edna Spalding in Places in the Heart and Norma Rae for the late 80’s drama! Who doesn’t love Sally? No one.

The fashion looks at the Vanity Fair Oscars party doesn’t get much better than Melissa Mccarthy and Ben Falcone’s coordinating looks. The Bridesmaids star is known for putting a humorous spin on award show celebrations. Melissa channelled Queen Anne from the movie, My Favourite, complete with soft toy rabbits attached to the cape when presenting an award, so we don’t expect anything less than the cosiest of looks at the typically glamourous annual event. The star pair stepped out in matching monochromatic adidas Originals tracksuits in true comedic style. Melissa works her tracksuit in the classic Nike Cortez in Black. The hilarious duo first met way back in the late 90’s at a comedy writing class and finally tied the knot in 2005. Couples matchy-matchy is always on our list!

In 2017, we saw the beloved Michael J Fox made a rare appearance at the 89th Academy Awards ceremony with comedy genius Seth Rogan. The pair stepped out on stage to pay tribute to Michael J Fox’s work on the bloackbuster classic, Back to the Future. Seth put a modern spin on the classic movie by debuting the Nike Air Mags, which first featured in the movie sequel back in 1989. Prior to presenting Best Film Editing to Hacksaw Ridge director, John Gilbert. Rogan and Fox reminded everyone of their favourite cult classic with the BTTF DeLorean in the background, resulting in one of the most epic moments in Oscar history.

It’s not the Oscars but we can’t write an awards show feature on sneakers without a mention of Cybill Shepherd! Shepard showed us how it’s done all the way back in 1985 at the Emmys, when she rocked a strapless black dress with bright coral Reebok Freestyles. Shepard continued to incorporate sneakers in to her red carpet looks and rocked a pair of diamond encrusted hi-top sneakers paired with a vibrant red tux at the Golden Globes back in 1996! Thank you Cybill, for showing everyone how it’s done.

Fun fact! Shepard had a love for the super 80’s sneaker style, she actually had 5 pairs all in different colours! Who doesn’t love a Freestyle?!
