FAQs

Koryo, a town in Nara Prefecture that has made socks since 1910, when a local yarn merchant came back from America with a knitting machine. It now produces more socks than any other part of Japan, and people there still call sock knitting "weaving", from the region's older textile trade.

A sock with two faces knitted as one — wool on the outside for warmth, organic cotton on the inside so the wool never touches your skin. It's the brand's landmark product and the reason most people hear of RoToTo in the first place. If your feet get cold in winter, this is the one.

A designer called Daisuke Ishii, who started the brand in 2014 around a single idea: a consumable you can love for a lifetime. Every pair is made in Nara, and the brand chooses the yarn and the knitting machine separately for each style rather than running everything on the same set-up.

Pile is the knit — a looped inside that makes the sock thick and soft. Room socks are the ones made for wearing indoors, usually in pile, sometimes in merino lambswool. So most room socks are pile socks, but the chunky pile boot socks are pile socks meant for going out.
