Bulletin: The New Balance 327 in Moonbeam and Black
The New Balance 327 doesn't need much of an introduction any more. It sold out on debut, sold out again on the first restock, and has carried on doing it season after season since.
It comes out of New Balance's seventies running archive and you can see exactly where — the oversized N across the side is lifted straight off the racing shoes of that era. What's new is underneath. The 327 sits on an angled footbed that flares out past the upper, so from above and from the side it reads quite differently from an ordinary low-profile lace-up. Rather than round and cute, they're edged and fierce. Quite striking all round.
Moonbeam is the one people go looking for. It's the softest of the colourways and the easiest to put with anything, and the flecked rope laces give it an outdoors look the plainer versions don't have.
The all-black leather version is the practical one. Smooth leather instead of suede and mesh, which makes it the better bet through the colder months when everything else you own is getting soaked.
One thing worth knowing about how they sit on the foot: that angled sole is wider at the base than the upper suggests, so the 327 takes up more room than a flat-soled trainer does. It looks best with something that finishes above the ankle — a cropped trouser, a midi, a shorter jean. Long wide-leg denim tends to swallow the shape you're paying for.
