An Insight into The New Balance 2002R

Based on the New Balances 2002 sneaker released in 2010, but reimagined for a 2020 release – the 2002R is one of the hottest sneakers in the game currently and remains a staple in many sneakerheads collections.

The original silhouette was part of New Balances’ ‘Made in USA’ range; however, the recent re-release of the sneaker was crafted in Asia with a sole unit reminiscent of the NB 860v2. Reissued at a much more accessible price point, a more streamlined silhouette, and a more lightweight sole – the drop of the 2002R hit the sneaker community by surprise. The hype around the sneaker was elevated by the Salehe Bembury collaboration which saw sneakerheads around the world desperate to cop the vibrant take on the sneaker.

Since then, brands like Ganni, Auralee, thisisneverthat and Joe Freshgoods have all collaborated on the 2002R – evidencing not only the silhouettes success, but the transformation of attitudes from the sneaker community that New Balance’s ‘Made in England’ and ‘Made in the US’ range are the only silhouettes that deserve attention and hype.

In 2021, the New Balance Refined Future Pack which was known as the Protection Pack landed and took the shape of a deconstructed 2002R silhouette, instantly it sold out - with people paying extortionate resell prices in order to get their hands on them. This marked a high point for the 2002R, New Balance responded to the phenomenon and launched it in a series of colourways in 2022.
